She who loves

There are very few real teachers you will encounter in this life alongside your heart.
Debra is one of them.

There was a time in my life when I was running around in search of teacher(s). ha! the ones I approached, inspired by their books, talks or manners, either disappointed me or kindly turned me down. Life always played cosmic jokes on me and then one day I finally realized that the greatest teacher is to be found within. I sought no more after that.

But then, as life offers certain gifts once you let go of expectations, this tall and long-legged blond woman showed up in my life in disguise of bee-loved. Something invisible yet palpable summoned us and 20 minutes into our second conversation, I invited her to Turkey to teach "bee". She said a big loud YES right there and then, later confessing to me she didn't even know where Turkey was in that moment.

I trust my intuition and the immediacy of certain instincts and the surprising intimacy I feel upon encountering certain people in my life. There is this undeniable, instantaneous recognition and I ride that wave of invitation with full trust.

Since Debra came into my life - for which I thank Gods and Goddesses and all divine forces every day in every direction - I have been infused with her sweet medicine of unconditional trust, love and gratitude, silliness, fun and joy, compassion and presence. How did I get so lucky?

One of my favorite poets, late John O'Donohue has a beautiful explanation for my relationship with Debra:

"Anam is the Gaelic word for soul; cara is the word for friend. So anam cara means soul friend. The anam cara was a person to whom you could reveal the hidden intimacies of your life. This friendship was an act of recognition and belonging. When you had an anam cara, your friendship cut across all convention and category. You were joined in an ancient and eternal way with the friend of your soul.

The anam cara experience opens a friendship that is not wounded or limited by separation or distance. Such friendship can remain alive even when the friends live far away from each other. Because they have broken through the barriers of persona and egoism to the soul level, the unity of their souls is not easily severed. When the soul is awakened, the physical space is transfigured. Even across the distance two friends can stay attuned to each other and continue to sense the flow of each other's lives. With your anam cara, you awaken the eternal. In this soul space there's no distance.

It could be a meeting on the street, or a party or a lecture, or just a simple, banal introduction, then suddenly there is a flash of recognition and the embers of kinship glow. There is an awakening between you, a sense of ancient knowing.”
― John O'Donohue, Anam Cara: A Book of Celtic Wisdom

And it's like that. I found a soul friend in the most beautiful expression of a human form who continues to open my heart, my mind and my imagination. A great teacher who never claims to be one! A real teacher who teaches by being who she is, by loving, by her kindness, by her silliness, by her acceptance, by her immense presence. I have never felt so seen, heard, recognized, championed and uplifted by anyone in my entire life; and not because I am special (although I am special) but because this is how Debra comes into relationship with all of Creation including bees, cats, trees, you, me, dolphins. This is what I call a great teaching: because I look at her and I feel beautiful, I look at her and I think this path of loving kindness is possible and real. Because in Debra's presence my heart is overflowing with joy and gratitude. and absolute magic and mischiviousness!

When you find one, cherish her/him with all your heart and soul, like I do.
And let them show you the Honey (in the heart)...
